Chapter 28 – Evil Sentinel

“We don’t know where it will come up again! Back to back everyone and be ready!”

I shouted to everyone.
Luce and Mabel quickly moved to Celt’s side, who became unable to walk due to the paralytic poison.

“Mabel, don’t try to cure his paralysis for now! It will most likely aim to attack you when you are healing!”

“I-I know that!”

Mabel listened to my instructions.

“I’ve heard something…..there!”

Celt pointed at the place in front of Luce.
It seems his Hunter Skill, [Enhanced Hearing] has reacted.
Just as he said that, the monster appeared by piercing the surface of the water.

“AaaaAAAAAH!”

A humanoid upper body and a fish-like lower body…..It can somewhat remind people of the fantastical mermen, but the monster’s appearance in front of me was more beast-like and resembling a mummy.

――――――――――――――――――――
Monster: Evil Sentinel
Level: 76
HP: 270/270
MP: 127/132
――――――――――――――――――――

It seems it’s called an Evil Sentinel.
A paralyzing attack and an ambush Skill, a terrifying combination.

“Eeeyy…..ugh…!”

Luce’s knife collided with the Evil Sentinel’s claws.
She managed to flip the Evil Sentinel behind her, but then it kept looking for an opportunity to once again attack her while quickly swimming around, half submerged in the water.

“[Ice]!”

Mabel shot an ice projectile towards the Evil Sentinel.
It managed to evade it by completely submerging itself under the water surface.

“Such a troublesome enemy…..”

If at all possible, I don’t want to use [Half-Dead Savage Dragon] here.
Anything could happen during the Raid this time.

We don’t have the time to wait for my HP and MP to recover naturally, and I don’t really want to make Mabel use her Healing Magic on me, since I would like her MP to be used more appropriately.

And above all that, it would be very problematic to try to use [Half-Dead Savage Dragon] here.
I would like to adjust my HP with [Life Shield] after receiving one hit, but the Evil Sentinel regrettably possesses a paralytic attack.
If I get hit by that, I might even lose my life without even being able to properly fight back.

“I will show its position with my arrows! Aim there!”

Celt shouted while preparing his bow.

“I see, perhaps with that……!”

I readied my sword.

With Celt’s [Enhanced Hearing], he could tell the monster’s position.
If we know where it will come up, its ambush won’t be that dangerous anymore.

“There!”

Celt’s arrow pierced into the ground.
I quickly rushed to the location of the arrow.
In the next moment, the Evil Sentinel appeared from the water.

“AAAAAAAAAAH!”

“[Parry]!”

While leaning back, I deflected the Evil Sentinel’s claws upwards.
I then proceeded to shove my shield in front of me.

“[Shield Bash]!”

“AAAH!”

The Evil Sentinel’s body flew into the air.

“I can work with this!”

Luce lowered her stance and readied her knife.
It seems she intended to use [Dragon Killer Thrust] on the defenseless Evil Sentinel in the air.

However, in the next moment the form of the Evil Sentinel flickered, then split up into three separate images.

“No way…….that’s, [Doppel Illusion]….!? Uuuh!”

Luce moved to thrust.
Though she managed to hit its actual body, since she was somewhat hesitant in the process, the blow became too shallow.
The Evil Sentinel managed to almost evade the hit by twisting its body, keeping its injury to a superficial one.

Although the [Dragon Killer Thrust]’s critical rate is influenced by the user’s Luck, if you don’t manage to fulfill the prerequisite of properly landing a hit with the technique, then it doesn’t matter.

“Kyaah!”

Luce got hit by the claws in her abdomen.
The Evil Sentinel evaded Celt’s arrow by going underwater once again.

“Luce!”

“I-I’m sorry…..”

Judging from her appearance, it seems Luce was also paralyzed.
After Celt, even Luce got hit.

Once getting hit by a paralytic, the victim will not just be unsteady on their feet, but their speed will greatly decrease as well.
For a Skill that the monster uses so freely, it’s quite a problematic one to deal with.
With two of us getting hit with the paralytic poison, the possibility of trying to find an opportunity to cure it and then run away becomes that much more difficult.

“I need to cure at least one of them or this will be the end for us……!”

Mabel pointed her staff at Celt.

“Oy, don’t be hasty with that! It’s coming from in front of you!”

Celt raised his voice.
As if it was just waiting for the cue, the Evil Sentinel showed itself by breaking through the water surface.
Mabel managed to avoid a direct hit by blocking with her staff, but the clawes still managed to carve a chunk out of her arm.

Now three of us were hit with a paralytic.

“You bastard…..[Shadow Stomp]!”

I stomped on the Evil Sentinel’s shadow.

“AAAh…….?”

The Evil Sentinel that was trying to go after Mabel stopped.

…..I was somehow able to stop the fast movements of the Evil Sentinel by using the opportunity provided by it trying to attack Mabel to use [Shadow Stomp] on it.
With this it shouldn’t be able to use its [Ground Swim] Skill to submerge itself into the ground completely.

However, it took too much to accomplish.
With three of us paralyzed, there is no one to fight the Evil Sentinel.

“You need to calm down, Mabel! Cure Luce first instead of me! She’s the only one that can deliver a decisive blow against that disgusting fish!”

Celt shouted.
Hearing Celt’s voice, Mabel opened her eyes with a start.

“I-I know that!”

“AAAAAAAAAAAH!”

The Evil Sentinel started swimming through the ground surface straight at me.
I used [Magic Guard] to block its attack.

…..I can’t move even a single step while [Shadow Stomp] is active.
With that it became very difficult to adjust the position of my feet to best prepare against the enemy’s attack.
However, even by myself, I will make sure to buy enough time for Mabel to cure Luce.

I twisted my body by using my foot that was standing on the shadow as the axis and fended off the claw attack of the Evil Sentinel.

“[Parry]!”

“AaAH!!”

After it was thwarted, the Evil Sentinel quickly half-sank back into the ground.

…..it’s a really troublesome monster to fight.

A paralytic attack that it can use frequently and an ability to sneak around with [Ground Swim].
In addition to that, it has a high level and it’s specialized in making use of its high Agility stat.
Compared to its level, each its attacks are somewhat light, but its Status is basically built for its hit and run tactics that allows it to torture its victims to death.

And the most important part is that it also has a high level of intelligence that it can use to determine the best use of those abilities to take down its prey for sure.

I thought it was going to jump back to attack me right away, but then it started to swim around me in a circle.

“No way. Did it manage to pinpoint the weakness of the [Shadow Stomp] from just that?”

Since I can’t easily move my feet while I’m using [Shadow Stomp], it’s hard to defend against the attacks of fast moving opponents like the Evil Sentinel that can circle around and attack me from a blind spot.
In addition to that, attacks from the Evil Sentinel could be especially hard to deal with thanks to the very low angle it can attack from due to its ability to swim in the ground.

Seeing how it was lying in wait near a rare item for adventurers to come by and everything, this guy is simply too smart.
I’ve had some concerns about the intelligence levels of monsters ever since our fight with the Embryo. This difference might very well be the largest change compared to when this was still just a game.
