Chapter 2 – Skill Tree

Notice: This chapter was translated by Nakki, and is slated to receive a re-translation in the future by me. Also, if the original translator doesn’t want the chapter up here, then contact me and I will remove it. I only put it here because the original page cannot be reached anymore.

“That bastard of a father… What a heartless thing to do…”

To avoid troublesome things happening from my face being discovered, I had come to the neighboring city of Rondalm, away from the city where the Edvan Household’s mansion was located by riding a carriage.

And since I don’t go out from the Edvan County’s territory, there’s no way my face would spread to the people from the neighboring towns.

Also, traveling long distances in a carriage needs a lot of space and time.

For a while, I guess, I’ll make this city my base and live here.

I really had a rough time. Had I not regained my memories from before I got reincarnated, I wouldn’t have been able to recover from this situation for the rest of my life.

However, now that the memories of my previous life had returned, to me, living as a nobleman is a big no.

It’s true that this world’s nobility had a strong powerful influence but, that’s because they had an obligation as one to fulfill.

But for me, living a carefree life while traveling around here and there would be the most ideal.

“But after finally being reincarnated into the game <Magic World>… I need to fully enjoy this situation and freely explore every nook and cranny of this world.”

But the thing is… Compared to the game setting, this world’s history and topography are completely different. Neither the names of countries and places match as well. The culture is also quite different. I guess I need to gradually investigate areas one after another again, huh..

But, before doing those things.. The first thing I have to do is to check and verify my class and skills.

This is the fun part I’ve been looking forward to.

However, if the class’ specs are different here, it’d really deal quite a blow to me.

It would be a very terrible situation if the broken abilities of the Heavy Knight class had been updated without me knowing.

Viewing the situation from the standpoint of the next head of the family, I could not exactly be busy minding how to explain my eccentric activities to the surrounding people.

“There’s a lot of things that need to be done, huh.. So what, isn’t it perfectly fine?”

Still, I didn’t think my father was that kind of person.

Nah, now that I have regained the memories of my previous life and developed a broader sense of values, I can see that he was a greedy, irresponsible man who was harsh on others while being kind to himself. Perhaps he’s like that because the Edvan County Household didn’t have anyone who could give a piece of mind about the deeds of the head of the family.

I knew that Maris, who had become the next head of the Edvan Household, was an eccentric girl, but originally, she wasn’t like that.

Everytime she sees me, she’d sneer.

I don’t have any memories of it, but she seems to hold a grudge against me.

Still, if she wanted to get rid of me, she should’ve told me so. In the first place, I’m glad to have an excuse for getting the hell out of that place.

I looked out the window and let out a sigh.

“Farewell, Mother, Father.”

Of course, I had uneasy feelings.. Even that man was my father in this life. But for now, I have no choice but to look ahead. After all, if I just spaced out and let my guard down for a moment, I could die.

I slapped my cheek as I thought of that fact.

“Okay! Gloomy story time’s over! If I have to hand my shitty father his ass, I have to be a thousand times stronger than him!”

After all, I’ve got this much knowledge in my arsenal, so I have to fully exploit it.

“<Status>!” As I chanted those words, light gathered and projected a space that contained my character information.

――――――――――――――――――――

【Elma Edvan】

Class:Heavy Knight

Level :1

HP :10/10

MP :4/4

ATK:3+5

DEF:3+5

INT:5

SPD:3

【Equipment】

〈Inferior Soldier’s Sword〉

〈Iron Armor〉

【Special Skill】

〈None〉

【Normal Skill】

〈None〉

【Title】

〈None〉

――――――――――――――――――――

Those were displayed as I checked my status once again.

The 〈Inferior Soldier’s Sword〉and〈Iron Armor〉were items I chose that seemed suitable while on the way to this inn. At the very least those items were the minimum I could obtain given the situation. After all, weapons that are stronger than one’s status would only get in the way as they were unusable. These items were the limit I can get at the moment.

It’s fine to use it for now, since it would soon be useless anyway. And, since using equipments in the early stages could easily raise your level, let’s not be frugal here and use it as it is.

I touched the screen of my <Status> with my fingers.

“Let’s see.. Skill Tree…”

<Status> also had another feature called the Skill Tree.

――――――――――――――――――――

【Skill Tree】

[Remaining Skill Points:5]

〈Vow of the Heavy Armor[0/100]〉

〈Increased Defense[0/50]〉

〈Novice Swordsmanship[0/50]〉

――――――――――――――――――――

To sum it up, with this, you had the option to freely choose which area of skills you will want to acquire. You can do so by allocating skill points to each skill tree, which then in return would give you skills from the skill tree you chose.

The initial bonus points you acquire when you gain a class are the[Remaining Skill Points:5] After that, everytime your level increases, it also increases by 【1】. So you shouldn’t be an idiot and distribute them carefully, as it is no exaggeration to say that it determines your fate from that point onwards.

There are two types of skill trees: those that are class-specific and those that are acquired at random when you create your character.

And among my skill trees, the only class-specific skill tree that I have is the〈Vow of the Heavy Armor〉. It is a skill tree exclusive only for the Heavy Knight, and was said to be the weakest joke-skill tree to exist.

It’s a skill tree that, when used properly, is rather powerful, but is overwhelmingly difficult to handle, and a lot of its skill doesn’t have any timing to use in the first place.

〈Increased Defense〉is a very useful skill tree in its own right. You can’t obtain any skills from it but in return, you can steadily improve your defensive power a lot.

〈Novice Swordsmanship〉is also, well.. not bad. Once developed fully,  it can be evolved into a superior swordsmanship using a unique item.

Both skill trees are highly practical.

“Hm… Well, I’m gonna go with this one..” I said as I operated my <Status> by hand.

――――――――――――――――――――

【Skill Tree】

[Remaining Skill Points:0]

〈Vow of the Heavy Armor[5/100]〉【+5】

〈Increased Defense[0/50]〉

〈Novice Swordsmanship[0/50]〉

――――――――――――――――――――

Even though I said it was the weakest joke-skill tree to ever exist in the <Magic World>, it was only considered to be that way in the early days of the game. Although, now that it has been thoroughly analyzed, it has been proven to be the strongest skill tree.

If you wanted to max out your skill tree, you had to be 【Lv:95】in order to do so.

You can’t afford to waste your skill points to useless status ups or to any degraded skill trees like 〈Novice Swordsmanship〉.

【〈Vow of the Heavy Armor〉has been increased to [2/100]. Normal Skill〈Rampart Return〉has been acquired.】

【〈Vow of the Heavy Armor〉has been increased to [5/100],〈DEF:+10〉has been acquired.】

Nice! I got it!

I grinned and laughed as I read the displayed message.

――――――――――――――――――――

〈Rampart Return〉【Normal Skill】

If the skill user took a direct hit from an opponent’s close-ranged attack and blocked off the damage, damage can be inflicted to the opponent based on the skill user’s defense.

――――――――――――――――――――

When a damage is blocked off, it means that the skill user’s defense is much higher than the enemy and they couldn’t even do as much as to scratch you.

In simpler terms, the formula to calculate for the damage taken in <Magic World> would be【〈Damage〉=〈Attack Power〉-〈Defensive Power〉÷ 2】.

The damage would be depending on where someone has been hit, of course.

In short, it would be difficult to completely block off the damage and would only work when the enemy is lower leveled. However, this is where the bonus skill points I’ve allocated into my〈Vow of the Heavy Armor〉comes in handy.

The 【DEF:+10】I’d acquired while still in the early level is a pretty awesome deal, and more so if you’re well equipped with armor. Since low level monsters with mostly no attack skills couldn’t even break through. And when careless monsters suddenly attack you, with the unbreakable defensive power of the heavy knight, they would be bounced off and have their existence erased in an instant.

Though, within those monsters, there are clever ones who could break through the defensive power of Heavy Knights, but I have a rough idea of their nature, so if I see some suspicious ones, I just don’t need to fight them.

“Well then… I’m looking forward for tomorrow as well.”

  1. I dislike how it leads into a “the last paragraph means literally nothing” idk if it’s translator or original text but ugh. Lss people treated this skill tree as trash but it’s powerful…. honestly I think the author never plays mmos cause alot of people would play this class and post reports on what the learnt of the class so it wouldn’t take over 5 years to learn……… it’s a fricking counter based class, of course people would play it, weird timing counters? Look at the challenge runs for bloodborne especially with consumables only.

Early on that skill is trash, sorry but to the game devs you would do a retalition damage attack that proccs regardless, UNLESS blocked damage refers to using a shield to block the damage (in which case alot more players would flock to this class cause shields only)
